Donny Tesso is one of the most in demand bassist in the Southwest. His vast body of bass work can be heard daily across many radio stations in this region and beyond. His unique and powerful style of bass playing has earned him the nickname “Yuma Bomber” after his place of birth, Yuma, Arizona. Donny has lived in New Mexico since 1988 after five years of playing the brutal Las Vegas, Nevada circuit. Born in the early 60’s, Donny credits his versatility and command of the bass to his era of growing up. He was mesmerized with Motown and the incredible body of bass work. He would learn many years later it was James Jamerson, who played bass on 99% of the Motown songs.“You could turn the radio on and there was awesome bass playing on almost every song”, according to Donny. He was fortunate to grow up in a musical household with his father and brother. In junior high, he joined his fathers band and began his professional career. He would have to master Country and Western, Spanish, and Rock-n-Roll as his father would not have it any other way.

Donny studied Jazz in high school, and was asked to join the jazz band by the band teacher, after hearing him play. During this time it was the discovery of legendary bassist Stanley Clark who turned Donny on to bass as a solo instrument. He began to focus on heavy grooving, listening to Verdine White, Chuck Rainey, Rocco Prestia, Larry Graham, and many other incredible bassists of the 70’s. Donny has the ability to solo and groove utilizing many different styles.

Donny is a walking dictionary of bass playing with nearly 40 years of experience. The ability to groove while adding color to a song/recording is what he does best. Bringing good tone, a receptive attitude, and being prepared is a routine that he employs. When Donny is not performing, touring, instructing or recording, he is producing bands and artists. He has received back to back nominations for “Producer Of The Year” by the NMHMA for his efforts. Donny has been recognized worldwide by a several major musical instrument manufacturers. He has artist endorsements from Ken Smith Basses, Lakland Basses, Roscoe Basses, Wilkins Guitars and Genz Benz Amps. He has been asked by SOCO Custom Guitars to design a ‘Donny Tesso’ Signature Bass. The prototype is in motion at this time. Now his fans, students, and peers can soon own a Donny Tesso signature bass designed by the “Yuma Bomber” himself.
